Why did you choose this industry?
Well, I grew up in the beauty industry. Since I was 7 years old, my mother had a salon for 42 years, it felt like second nature to me.
How long have you been active in this industry?
It has been a journey, I have been in this industry now for 21 years. We have had some great time, some hard times, but all in all most days that were amazing.
We have heard a lot of names for this profession, what would you call yourself?
That is true, in this profession there have been a lot of different titles popping up. However, I consider myself a Beauty Therapist/ Make-up artist.
Have you ever had an ‘oops’ moment with a client? What happened?
Oh yes, many. But there is one I will never forget.
It was in my first year after I completed my studies. Was working at The Beauty Spot in Standton . My client booked for an eyebrow wax and tint. She was so relaxed and sleepy. While I was working, she fell asleep and did not realize that the tint was already on the eyebrow, she wiped the back of her hand over her forehead and all the tint ended up all over her hand, face and under her new set of beautiful french manicured nails. Luckily we were able to wipe it off quickly. What a rush!
If you could give an award to any woman in your life for her inspiration, who would it be? Why would you choose this person?
Oh that one is easy. My Mother, Elize Koen Smith. What an inspiring, energetic, positive and stunning woman. She had her own beauty salon for 42 years. Everything I am today is because of her. She gave me all the right ‘tools’ in life to be a success.
What is the most fascinating part of your daily life at work?
Working with wonderful dynamic women at Salonique Nelspruit. Being part of a strong supportive team who has the same passion in life, who loves people and loves it even more to make them look and feel good.
